Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking: A Dangerous Link
Domestic violence and human trafficking often intersect, creating a cycle of exploitation and abuse that can be hard to break. Traffickers and abusers frequently use manipulation, fear, and control to dominate their victims, leaving them feeling trapped and powerless.
The Overlap Between Abuse and Trafficking
- Control and exploitation: Many trafficking victims are first groomed or coerced by someone they know, often through domestic violence or intimate partner abuse.
- Isolation tactics: Traffickers isolate victims from their support systems, making it harder for them to seek help.
- The role of vulnerability: Survivors of domestic violence are at higher risk of being targeted for trafficking, as abusers exploit emotional, financial, or physical vulnerabilities.
Recognizing the Signs
Victims of domestic violence and trafficking often face:
- Constant monitoring or restriction of movement
- Fear of leaving due to threats of harm or deportation
- Lack of access to personal identification, money, or communication
